Exhibition Van Abbemuseum, 18-07-2020, 30-05-2021. - Catalog accompanying the exhibition of the Cameroonian artists Victor Sonna. In 2015, Victor Sonna in New Orleans bought chains from an enslaved one. The number 152 was engraved on these chains. The purchase is the starting point of a personal voyage of discovery along Ghana and Suriname, among others. The result is one hundred and two fifty unique works of art & ndash; the series 152 - six films and two fifty prints in which Victor deals with the theme of slavery in his own unique way. The exhibition title is a game with the number 152. Only a five is added. 1525: the year of one of the first transports of enslaved people in transatlantic slavery. Victor Sonna: & ldquo; I don't work with a preconceived plan. I had not foreseen that a purchase would lead to this trip. That's how it often goes with me; one flows from the other. I dive in and experience it. & Rdquo; For his series 152 Sonna collected 152 European gobelins, tapestries, made between the 18th and 20th century. He incorporated these tapestries into three series of works: Bleach and Dust, Sugar and Rubber and Maps. The works combine materials that he collected in trips to the Netherlands, Ghana and Suriname. Such as Ghanaian fabrics, African sculptures and objects related to slavery. The exhibition also shows six films and the series Prints: fifty two screen-printed windows with historical images about slavery. The films were made during the trips to Ghana and Suriname and explore the theme of the series 152 in a poetic and sometimes surrealistic way. Prints and films are shown in and around the installation. In a spectacular installation 25 meters high, 152 works can be seen that can be admired from both sides. As Victor himself says: "You can always look at a story from more than one angle." The design refers to the tower of Babel; the origin story about the disintegration of humanity into different peoples. Victor Sonna (1977) was born in Yaound & eacute ;, Cameroon and migrated to the Netherlands at a young age. He studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven and then switched to the St. Joost Academy. He was trained as a visual artist. He continued to live in Eindhoven all these years. Sonna makes extensive use of existing material for his work, such as bullet casings, metal sculptures, tapestries and transforms them into impressive works of art. His work is in international collections and shown internationally

Delivery

Count on 2 to 5 working days before your order is delivered. The actual delivery date depends on PostNL so we cannot therefore tell you exactly when the cards will be delivered. When you order a product over the weekend, the order will be processed on Tuesday. The order will be delivered at the earliest on Wednesday.

Cancelling an order
You cannot cancel an order. You will receive confirmation of your order by e-mail after placing and paying for your order. Your order is then also immediately sent to the printer.

Returning an order
You cannot return individual art cards. They have been printed especially for you, with your text and address. You can return card sets or other products subject to conditions.

Please contact our Customer Service Department before returning an order, so that we can serve you more quickly.

When to return?
A right-of-return period of 14 days applies to orders and it is effective from the first day after the day on which the product was delivered. Unless otherwise stated, you are entitled to inspect, appraise and/or try the product(s) during this period.

After you have received your order, please immediately check the item(s) for any damage and incompleteness. If you see any damage or incompleteness, please contact Customer Service as soon as possible.

If you are not satisfied with an item, you can return it. This does not apply to discounted products. You can return items:

• within the right-of-return period of 14 days
• if the item is incomplete
• in its original state and factory packaging – insofar as this is in fairness possible
• Some items cannot be returned. Here it concerns:
• products that have been tailored to your specifications
• items that are clearly of a personal nature or which cannot be sent back due to their nature
• products for which the seal has been broken

Always keep a copy of dispatch just in case the items returned do not arrive at their destination.

How to return a package
Check whether the item, any associated accessories and the original packaging are, where in fairness possible, still intact and in their original state.
Ensure that the package is wrapped properly, so that the item arrives at our address undamaged. Put the following address on the return packaging:

Post your package at a post office and make sure it has sufficient postage. Small packages can also be posted directly in a post box. You must pay the costs of return yourself.

You will receive the purchase amount, including the costs of dispatch to you, as soon as possible and no later than 30 days. This term starts at the moment that you return the items or when you indicate that you wish to return them. Damaged products cannot be refunded, unless the product is returned because of damage found upon their receipt.
